Alene (Nelson)
Dix
Mar 21, 1932 — Mar 13, 2026
St. Louis
Alice Alene Dix, beloved wife of Donald Dix, died on March 13, 2026 at home in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by her family. Alene (Nelson) Dix was born March 21, 1932, at the family farmhouse near Cheraw, Colorado, the daughter of Lew & Mary Alice Nelson and the youngest of 3 children.
At the age of 13, while attending a Summer Vacation Bible School, Alene heard a clear presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and received Christ as her personal savior. Alene graduated from Cheraw High School as valedictorian of her class in 1950. In 1954, she graduated from Moody Bible Institute. During her time at Moody, she felt her heart being pulled toward Africa, specifically to meet the need for teachers in the Belgian Congo. This led her to get a teaching degree from Wheaton College, IL.
In the Summer of 1957, while working as a counselor at Moody Youth Camp, she met Don Dix. Don and Alene were married on November 15, 1958 at Moody Church. They became missionaries with Africa Inland Mission and studied French in Belgium where David was born in 1959. The young family arrived in Congo in August 1960. By 1963, they had become a family of 5 with Debbie born in Uganda and Sharon by flashlight in Congo.
Serving faithfully in Congo from 1960 - 1991, Alene and Don served in every way possible loving God, the people of north east Congo and their fellow missionaries. Initially they taught in a high school for nationals who became leaders in churches, universities and seminaries in the region. Working alongside her Congolese sisters in Christ, Alene taught hundreds of ladies through Women of the Good News. Hosting countless missionaries through the years in her home and always answering the "Hodi" at the door with a "Karibu" of welcome, Alene was loved by everyone who met her.
Following their years in Congo, they served in the AIM international office in Bristol, England before retiring in Wheaton, IL. There they served African refugees settling in the Chicago area as well as continuing their lifelong involvement at the Moody Church.
Alene beamed on the outside from the love of God on the inside in every interaction with her African neighbors, her fellow missionaries, and in decades of weekly letters to her children. She served God as a wife, mother, grandma, missionary, prayer partner, mentor, teacher, helper and friend. She loved her family, serving people and talking to anyone about God's faithfulness.
Alene is survived by her loving and faithful husband of 67 years, Donald; her three children: David (Susan), Debbie (Andy) Krumsieg, and Sharon (Joel) Eland; 10 grandchildren: Melissa (Emanuel) Istrate, Emily (Doug) Kimball, Rebecca Poland, Joshua (Jocelyn) Dix, Benjamin (Trisha) Krumsieg, Christy (David) Vosburg, Aaron (Tae) Krumsieg, Caleb (Lydia) Krumsieg, Priscilla Eland, Daniel (Greta) Eland; 15 great grandchildren: Moriah, Ezekiel, Eden, Evelyn, Harvey, Andrew, Isaiah, Vivian, Nevaeh, Sawyer, Nora, Wendell, Brooks, Hudson, Shepherd.
