Obituary

Allen Otto Dolezal, baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, Tuesday, September 2, 2025.  Beloved husband of Nancy Joan Dolezal (nee Ryan) for 64 years; dear father of Julie (Greg) Dillon, Jeffrey (Patricia) Dolezal, John Dolezal, and Janice Dolezal (partner Bill Cassely); loving grandfather of Chelsea (Colin) Greeson, Haley Dolezal, Shea (Tyler) Voss and Connor (Jackie) Dillon; great-grandfather of Mallory Greeson, Aurelia Voss, and Blake Dillon; brother-in-law to John Ryan and Kathy Dougherty; our dear uncle, cousin and friend  He was preceded in death by his parents Otto Wm. and Arline A. Dolezal (nee Stahle), in-laws Robert J. and Mary D. Ryan (nee Blazek) infant son Gregg Dolezal, and sister-in-law Georgia Ryan.

Allen had his first job to help out the family at age 10. He rode his bike to the local bowling alley to set pins. At 16 years old, he learned to fly at Iowa City Airport. He went into the National Guard at 17 years old. The summer before senior year in high school he went to Idaho to fight forest fires. He spent a year at the University of Iowa, pledging Sigma Epsilon, before leaving to enlist in the Army. He was sent to Korea, 12 miles south of the DMZ. When the Army found out he could fly, especially at night, he was made the personal pilot of Colonel Bloom. He flew a Cessna L-19 Bird Dog plane, an observation plane that flew over enemy locations gathering intel. He also had an office job in Seoul.

After the Army he went to Tulsa, Oklahoma to study, and then teach, plane instruments at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology. It was there he met the love of his life, Nancy Ryan. They married November 19, 1960 and moved to his hometown, Iowa City, Iowa. There he started a long career with Moore Business Forms as a salesman, then District Manager. His job took the family all over Iowa, before settling in Chesterfield, Missouri in 1980. He was a great salesman, winning many Achievement Awards and trips. After leaving Moore he went to work for Shade Business Forms. He retired from Shade, but then decided to go back to work at Sears, where he took the Chesterfield store carpet division to Number 2 in the nation. He retired again, but retirement wasn't for him, so a few months later he went back to Sears to sell lawn mowers. His final retirement was at the age of 82.

He loved the outdoors, and he and Nancy would pack up the family many weekends to go fishing, boating, and camping. Hunting was another activity he participated in since he was young. He and Nancy also spent several weekends in their later years visiting Branson, Missouri. He was proud of his service in the Army, and wore his Army or Korea hats everywhere he went. His final years were spent enjoying the company of his kids and grandkids, especially eating ice cream with his great granddaughters Mallory and Aurelia. His quiet demeanor will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
