Anna "Jean"
Unrath
Jun 21, 1931 — Oct 13, 2025
Ballwin
Anna 'Jean' Unrath was 94 when she entered her Heavenly Home October 13, 2025. Jean was born in Hastings, MN, on June 21, 1931. When she was three years old, her family moved to Decatur, IL. Jean attended St. John's Lutheran School through the 8th grade. After she graduated from Decatur High School, she worked for the Wabash Railroad for 2 years. She met Richard 'Dick' Unrath through the Walther League at church. They married on Jan 1, 1954, ensuring there was always a party on their anniversary! Jean always said, "I married a teacher but lived with an Air Force officer," as she accompanied Dick all over the world with the USAF. They moved 13 times and lived in 9 states as well as the Azores off Portugal and Ankara, Turkey. When Dick was sent remote to Thailand twice for a year-long assignment, Jean moved the family back to Decatur, IL, where both sets of grandparents lived. Her three children, Tom, Tim, and Linda got to know their grandparents well. As an Air Force spouse, Jean was active in the Officers' Wives' Club. She volunteered with Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. She volunteered at the Red Cross and Family Services. While at Pope AFB, she sang with the Pope Pipers, a women's chorus. When Linda was in high school in Austin TX, Jean worked as an office manager at a doctor's office. Her family always joined a Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Valparaiso University Guild. Jean loved reading, singing, cooking, and sewing. After Dick retired from the USAF in 1980, they moved to Ballwin, MO, where Dick worked for Emerson Electric. They joined St. Paul Lutheran Church, Des Peres, and were very active in the congregation. Jean taught Bible studies and sang in the choir for many years. They formed deep friendships with St. Paul members and often went camping, took cruises, and traveled with their friends. They played Pinochle regularly and enjoyed hosting others at their home. Jean was a wonderful cook and baker and enjoyed sharing delicious meals with others. Jean and Dick moved into a lovely apartment in Meramec Bluffs Lutheran Senior Living in May 2013. As a mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Jean will be sorely missed. We know that because of her strong faith in Jesus, she has been ready to go to Heaven where she will be reunited with her loved ones. According to her daughters-in-law, Jean was the most loving and caring mother-in-law a girl could ever have!
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her two younger brothers Ronald and Dennis Raebel and her granddaughter, Nicole Unrath. She is survived by her children: Thomas (Anita) Unrath, (Melbourne, FL), Timothy (Angela) Unrath, (Austin, TX), and Linda (Randy) Dessau, (Ballwin, MO). Her grandchildren are John Unrath, (NY, NY), Megan Unrath (Peter Nicholas), (Austin, TX), Ryan Unrath, (Austin TX), and Danielle Dessau, (Ballwin, MO).
