Barbara S.
Lee (Nee Bierbaum)
Jan 9, 1944 — Dec 22, 2025
Ballwin
Barbara S Lee. (nee Bierbaum), passed away, Monday, December 22, 2025, at the age of 81. She was born in St. Louis, a daughter of Carl G. and Mildred (nee Crites) Bierbaum.
Barbara was a 1961 graduate of Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Southeast Missouri State College in 1965 with a major in accounting and a minor in mathematics. She spent her 34-year career with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of St, Louis. She started in the accounting department, and after 3 years transferred to the computer programing department, later called Information Technology. While in IT, Barb did programming, project management and systems design and analysis on Blue Cross mainframe computer systems. After her retirement, Barb volunteered for 6 years as the children's apparel buyer for the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, South Campus Gift Shop. She also enjoyed meeting with her book club, bowling group, Alpha Xi Delta sorority sisters, and the Blue Cross/ Blue Shield retiree group.
In her youth, Girl Scouts was a primary focus, being a member from Brownies thru Senior Scouts. For many summers Barb served as a counselor at Camp Latonka, and in 1959 she was selected to represent the Otaki Council at the Girl Scout Senior Roundup in Colorado Springs, CO.
Barb was introduced to traveling by her parents. She visited all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and made 17 trips internationally. Her final adventure was in 2020 when she went to Australia and New Zealand. For a number of years, a travel destination for Barb and the rest of her family was a ski trip to Colorado or Utah. Barb was an incredible skier. The difficulty of the run didn't seem to bother her; she floated effortlessly like a butterfly from top to bottom. She was also a member of the St. Louis Ski Club and enjoyed making trips with them as well.
Her creative nature was displayed in the flower garden she designed and planted in her backyard. Throughout the year she would enjoy sitting in her 4-seasons room where she could see what was in bloom and watch the wildlife eat it right there before her eyes! Barb also made beautiful floral arrangements for friends and family members' weddings and other celebrations.
If you needed something sewn, then Barb was the one to call. She loved needlework and was a dressmaker, upholsterer, and quilter. She pieced and hand quilted many baby quilts that were donated to children's hospitals, and her great-niece Lillie and her doll received many adorable matching dresses.
Christmastime was a time for baking, and Barb did a lot of it! She spent days baking huge amounts of cookies, breads, caramel corn, candies and Chex Mix to give to her neighbors and St. Louis relatives, and then she would carry several shopping bags full of her treats to share with the rest of her family during the holiday.
Barbara was the beloved sister of Sally (Doug) Dirks; dear aunt of Carl (Tiffonie) Dirks; and proud great-aunt of Jake and Lillie Dirks. She was preceded in death by her parents and a great nephew Chase Dirks.
