Bartholomew "Bart"
S. Devoti
Nov 6, 1938 — Jul 3, 2026
Ballwin
Bartholomew "Bart" S. Devoti, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, volunteer, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, at the age of 87.
Bart was born on November 6, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Bart J. Devoti and Theodora Devoti (née Foglia). He was raised in St. Louis, where he attended St. Catherine's of Siena Elementary School and Christian Brothers College (CBC). Bart then went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Saint Louis University.
On July 16, 1960, Bart married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Patricia Devoti (née Gilliland), in St. Louis. Together they raised three children (Stephen, Christine, and Lisa), shared a lifelong love of dogs, and lived in several homes throughout St. Louis County.
Bart was a gifted educator who began his career teaching history at St. Thomas Aquinas, where he later became Assistant Principal. After earning his master's degree, he joined the University of Missouri-St. Louis as Director of Financial Aid before continuing his career at St. Louis Community College. There, he served in several leadership roles, including Director of Financial Aid, Dean of Student Support Services, and Community Liaison for the Wildwood campus.
Bart had a passion for helping others, whether family, friends, or members of the community. After retiring, he devoted a significant portion of his free time to volunteering with KidSmart, Circle of Concern Food Pantry, Missouri Botanical Garden, and Adopt-A-Highway.
Family was at the center of Bart's life. He especially loved spending time with his brother and best friend, Joe. Bart and Joe spent many hours working on renovation projects, woodworking, discussing books, and "solving all the world's problems" over a pot of black coffee.
Bart's hobbies included gardening, spending time with his dogs, traveling with Pat, nature, and history. An avid reader, he especially loved sharing the Harry Potter series with his grandchildren.
Bart was proud of his Italian heritage, traveling to Italy several times, and never lost his appreciation for good food. He carried on his family's Christmas Eve risotto tradition, passing it down to future generations.
Known affectionately as "Honey" by his grandchildren, he was a consistent face at their sporting events, dance recitals, horse shows, and school activities, and often dressed proudly in school spirit wear. He and Pat also shared their love of travel with their children and grandchildren, and many of his favorite memories were of their vacations together.
In 2021, Bart proudly embraced his newest role as great-grandfather and earned the nickname "Honey Bee" from his great-grandchildren. They always brought a smile to his face and he especially enjoyed going out to breakfast and sharing donuts with them.
Bart was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Patricia Devoti (née Gilliland); his parents, Bart and Theodora Devoti; and his brother-in-law, Donald Edney.
He is survived by his three children, Stephen (Lori) Devoti of Madison, Wisconsin; Christine (Fred) Thurauf of Ellisville; and Lisa (Steve) Hollander of Wildwood; seven grandchildren, Holly (James) Kuhl, Hannah Thurauf (Alexander Kilby), Nicholas Hollander (Sarah Slane), Sarah Hollander, Amanda Hollander (Chase Davis), Scout Devoti, and Vince Devoti; four great-grandchildren, Matilda, Audrey, and Walter Kuhl, and Quinn Thurauf Kilby; his siblings, Stephanie Edney, Mary (Bill) Saylor, and Joseph (Bonnie) Devoti; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Even in death, Bart continued caring for others through the gift of tissue donation, improving the lives of many.
We are deeply grateful to the nurses and staff at Solace Hospice House, whose compassionate care provided our father-grandfather-brother with such grace, dignity, and respect during his final days.
Bart found his greatest peace in nature. To honor his spirit, we encourage you to dress in the colors of the outdoors in your Sunday best. Please join us in celebrating his life at the memorial service and the reception detailed below.
