Obituary

Charles Frederick Spitler was a loving husband, son, brother, friend and co-worker. He left this world unexpectedly on January 25, 2022.

Charles was born on May 27, 1983. His birth was nothing short of a miracle as both he and his mother were given a low chance of survival. Survive they did and went on to live together for five more years in Rhode Island until her untimely death in 1988. Charles then came to live in St. Louis with his extended family.

Charles was an unapologetic lover of all things that grow in the Earth as well as creatures great and small. The last few years his birthdays were celebrated by a trip to the St. Louis Zoo to pet the stingrays. He also enjoyed tending to his garden, hiking, nature walks, visiting the Missouri Botanical Garden, and raising his five chickens.

During his free time you could find him listening to audiobooks, volunteering with the Appleseed Project, or operating his ham radio (KC0JCA). In the past he also volunteered with the Coast Guard Auxiliary Association in Granite City, Illinois.

He emulated the Boy Scout motto to always "Be Prepared". He took it seriously and was well prepared in the event of a zombie apocalypse as well as any other situation where having months of supplies on hand would be needed.

As much as Charles loved his hobbies, his daily passion was teaching students with disabilities at Newhoener High School in The Special School District of St. Louis County. Growing up with disabilities himself, Charles felt that he deeply understood the children he worked with and wanted to impact their lives in the same way his teachers had done for him.

Charles had a fantastic sense of humor, would eat anything spicy, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
