Obituary

Broughton, David Lee passed away peacefully in Chesterfield, Missouri, surrounded by his family on July 9, 2026, at the age of 79, after a life well lived.

David was born in Shelbina, Missouri, on October 5, 1946, to Grace and Melvin Broughton as the third of four children. He grew up learning the value of hard work alongside his two older brothers, George and Charlie, and his sister, Marge, on the family farm near Shelbina in Emden, Missouri. He began his formal education in a one-room schoolhouse and went on to graduate from Shelbina High School in 1964.  David became the first person in his family to attend and graduate from college. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Missouri in 1968 and later became a Certified Management Accountant.

David was united in marriage to Kathleen Anne Quinn on October 20, 1979, at Ascension Parish and was her beloved husband for 46 years. He was a proud and devoted father of Christopher (Carolyn) Broughton, Elizabeth (Bryan) Hartbeck, and Grace Anne (Jonathan) Sieker; grandfather of Maura, Cecilia, and David Broughton, Michael and Patrick Hartbeck, and Evelyn and George Sieker; brother of George Broughton, Marge Woolever, and the late Charlie Broughton; and a dear uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

David loved his family with all his heart and cherished every opportunity to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. Nothing brought David greater joy than watching his children and grandchildren grow and celebrating their accomplishments and special milestones.  He delighted in attending his children's and grandchildren's athletic competitions, school programs, and extracurricular activities, and he especially enjoyed hosting everyone for birthday, holiday, and special celebrations. His family treasures many fond memories of vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks and Hilton Head Island.  David was a loyal friend to many and will be remembered for his wit, wisdom, and generous service to others.

David began his career in St. Louis as an accountant at Monsanto's Queeny Plant and later traveled extensively around the world as an internal auditor for the company. He concluded his career at Monsanto in 2004 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprise.  Along the way, he formed many lifelong friendships that remained important to him throughout his life.  David also proudly served in the Missouri National Guard for more than a decade and embodied the values of sacrifice, service, and integrity.

David was a true servant leader who always looked for opportunities to help others.  Whether mentoring colleagues, serving on boards, or assisting friends and neighbors, he was known for his thoughtful counsel, quiet humility, and unwavering integrity.

David remained deeply committed to expanding educational opportunities for future generations and supporting his community.  During retirement, he stayed active as a consultant, donor, and board member.  He enjoyed serving on the Boards of Trustees of Linda Vista Catholic School, Ursuline Academy, and the Ursuline Education Network. He also served as a trustee of two homeowner associations and was a longtime supporter of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center.

A devoted Catholic and a man of deep faith, David served as a Captain for the White House Jesuit Retreat Center for 25 years and as a retreatant for more than 30 years. He was also deeply engaged at Ascension Parish for nearly 50 years as a Eucharistic Minister, Reach Out volunteer, and Parish Ambassador. His faith shaped every aspect of his life and inspired his commitment to service, family, and community.
David will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him. His legacy of faith, service, generosity, and love will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
