Obituary

Clinton, Della Maxine "Mac" (née Mathews), passed away Thursday, November 27, 2025.

Beloved wife of the late Melbourne Clinton; dearest mother of Deborah (Gary Walker) Tumulty and David (Brenda) Clinton; dear grandmother of Alicia (David) Bogue, Brent Tumulty, Drew (Kelly) Clinton, Chad (Denise) Clinton, Amie (Jacob) Hurst, Lauren (Michael) Vernaci, Kelly (Mark) Roettgen and the late Neil Tumulty; great-grandmother of Remy and Parker Bogue, Olivia, Sophia, Evelyn, Kennedy and Walker Clinton, Jacob, Gabriel, Eli and Jayde Hurst, Maci and Connor Rice, Chase, Brayden and Finley Vernaci, Taylor, Kobe and the late Alan Roettgen; loving daughter of the late Ashley Harrison and Della Mathews (née Dollar); sister of Bonnie Brown, Roger (Bonnie) Mathews, Rena Mae (the late James) Stark and the late James "Bus" (Louise) Mathews and Geraldine "Gerry" (James) Brown; our dear aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend of many.

Maxine lived a remarkable life filled with strength, humor, faith, and love. Born in Bourbon, Missouri, she spent her early childhood surrounded by the close-knit comforts of small-town life. She grew up in a home steeped in the belief that Jesus Christ is our Savior-a foundation that shaped her values, her kindness, and the way she approached the world. During the Great Depression, her family moved to St. Louis, where Maxine grew up in the city, developing both resilience and a spirited personality that would become her hallmark.

She met her future husband, Melbourne, at a skate party at the old Checkerdome-a story she cherished and retold with fondness for his skate dancing. After Mel returned from his military service, the two were married and began a lifelong partnership rooted in devotion, laughter, and steadfast support.

She remained exceptionally close to her brothers and sisters throughout her life. Whether it was sharing stories, celebrating family milestones, or simply enjoying one another's company, Maxine treasured the bond she shared with her siblings. Their love, laughter, and deep connection were lifelong sources of comfort and joy.

Maxine's faith was an anchor throughout her life, and it grew even stronger in her later years. She looked forward to her weekly Bible study gatherings with her sister Rena Mae and their neighbors-times filled with scripture, fellowship, and heartfelt conversation. Those afternoons deepened her relationship with Christ and brought her tremendous peace, purpose, and companionship.

Maxine was known for her quick wit, sharp mind, and timeless beauty, but above all, she was known for her deep love for her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy. She embraced every family gathering, holiday, and milestone with enthusiasm, creating a home where everyone felt welcome, valued, and loved.

Her nearly century-long life was filled with stories, wisdom, faith, and a warmth that touched all who knew her. She carried herself with grace, even during difficult times, and she found joy in the simple, meaningful moments-coffee at the kitchen table, a good laugh, a visit from family, or a memory shared.

Maxine will be deeply missed, but her legacy lives on in the generations that follow her and in the countless hearts she touched. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now reunited with Mel and with the loved ones who went before her, resting in the eternal peace of her Savior.

A life as long and rich as Maxine's is a blessing-one her family will forever cherish.
