Obituary

Frank Whitman Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and storyteller, passed away on April 7, leaving behind a life rich with music, words, and deep connection.

Frank was the beloved husband of Barbara, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership rooted in love and resilience since their marriage in 1966-on a day marked memorably by a blinding snowstorm. He was a proud father to Amanda (Justin) Gioia and an adoring grandfather to Ryan Gioia, who brought him immeasurable joy and was his co-pilot during many years of school pickups and fun trips. He was the cherished son of Margaret and Frank Whitman Sr., and the brother of David.

Born in Kentucky and raised in Danville and Louisville, Frank's love for music began early and never left him. As a young man, he played drums in Louisville clubs at an age most would consider far too young, eventually performing with several prominent big bands in the area, including at the Kentucky Derby. His musical journey included recording the song "Crawdad Song" with Chuck Harris and the Anteaters-a record that went on to chart and remains a point of pride and a reflection of his lifelong passion for rhythm and performance.  He played drums well into his 70s around St. Louis, dazzling listeners with his ability to pick up songs and entertain them.

Frank attended Trinity High School in Louisville and later the University of Louisville, where he earned a degree in English while balancing work and studies. He spent two years in the Army, beginning the start of his dislike of camping that he maintained throughout his life.

His professional path began in banking and journalism, including time at the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky. His career ultimately took him to St. Louis, where he joined Maritz and built an impressive career in communications. Through dedication, creativity, and leadership, he rose to become Vice President within their communications and performance improvement company.  He was well-regarded by team members at all levels for his talent, empathy and drive.

Frank and Barbara built a life together filled with adventure, friendships, and meaningful work. Their journey included a move to St. Louis, where they established their home, as well as a chapter in Milford, Michigan, where Frank played a key role in opening Maritz's Detroit office.

Later in his career, Frank worked as an independent communications consultant, becoming widely respected for his ability to help individuals and organizations tell their stories with clarity and heart. Whether through video, print, or emerging media, his work carried his signature thoughtfulness and insight. His expertise took him around the world, with travels to Germany, Italy, New York, Los Angeles, and many places in between.  TWA/American staff knew him by name and were always glad to see him.

Frank and Barbara liked traveling, and spent a lot of time doing so.  From Brazil to Europe, and a lot of places domestically, they enjoyed every minute.

Among many other virtues, Frank will be remembered for his creativity, his quiet sense of humor, his love of music and language, and the way he connected with people through stories-both his own and those he helped others share. Most of all, he will be remembered for his devotion to his family and the warmth he brought to their lives.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society , Evelyn's House Hospice , or to a charity of your choice.
