Obituary

James Franklin Kick was baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection on June 14, 2026.

Beloved husband for 53 years of Barbara Kick (née Liss); loving father of Laurie (Brian) Kick-Tournier, Elizabeth Kick, and Kimberly (Ryan) Geraghty; proud grandfather of Lily, Stuart, and Sylvester Tournier; Andrew and Austin Harszy; and James, Donovan, Avery, and Owen Geraghty. Dear brother of Mary Fear and Charlie (Sue) Kick; cherished brother-in-law of Sylvia (Ralph) Sloan, Nancy (Gary) Porterfield, Joe (Joan) Liss, and Peggy (Rich) Kraus.  Dear uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Louise Kick (née Stewart), and his sister, Ruth Howell.

Jim was born in Hayti, Missouri on September 12, 1951. Jim's family moved to Ballwin when he was in high school, and Jim graduated from Lafayette High School in 1969. A talented baseball player, Jim was drafted by the Cubs in 1969, but attended Meramec Community College for 2 years, then earned a baseball scholarship to Kansas State University. It was at Meramec that Jim met Barbara Liss, and Jim and Barb were married on June 15, 1973.

In 1981, Jim and Barb started C.A.P.S. Inc. The company started small, with Jim operating one machine himself in a small garage. Forty-five years later, C.A.P.S. now employs over 150 people in two facilities in Bridgeton and Earth City. While growing the company and raising his daughters, Jim continued his baseball career. Jim played amateur baseball into his 50's, winning a Senior World Series title along the way. He threw batting practice for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1980s and served as pitching coach for Saint Louis University in the late 90's. Jim was inducted in the Greater St Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. It is a testament to Jim's hard work, leadership, and service to others that so many of the friends and teammates from his baseball life have played important parts in the growth and development of C.A.P.S. and have remained life-long friends to Jim and Barb.

Jim began coaching his daughters' basketball teams, which turned into a 10-year run as girls' basketball coach at JFK High School. Jim developed a passion for golf and was a member at Fox Run and Meadowbrook Country Clubs. He found joy in spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them how to fish, play sports, collect rocks and throw a baseball.

Jim was a kind, hardworking, dedicated person that would help anyone. He loved to laugh and joke and had a genuine loving demeanor that everyone wanted to be around. Jim was so many things to so many people in every part of his life - father, husband, teammate, coach, businessman, golfer, mentor, friend.  The best reflection of Jim is the fact that in every part of his life, the people that came to know him all recognized his integrity, his compassion, and his willingness to help anyone who needed support.

He will be dearly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
