Leroy "Lee" Engert, beloved teacher, coach, mentor and community leader, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that shaped generations of students and athletes throughout the St. Louis, Missouri area.
Lee is survived by his three daughters: Renee Kiersznowski (Bob), Colette Harlow (Rob), Suzette Stefanic (Paul); two grandchildren, Nicholas Stefanic (Lauren), Amanda Salley (Colt); three great grandchildren, Evelyn Stefanic, Wyatt Stefanic, Cooper Salley.
Lee was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Julie "Joy" Engert, his parents Edward and Flora Engert, and his brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Gerry Engert.
For more than 45 years, Lee Engert dedicated his life to education and athletics. He began his career at Ritenour High School, serving as a teacher, coach, mentor and assistant principal from 1953 to 1988. He went on to teach and coach at Chaminade Preparatory School and John Burroughs High School. Known best for his excellence, on the baseball diamond, Coach Engert built one of the most respected high school baseball programs in Missouri history. During his baseball coaching career, his teams captured four Missouri State Championships, compiling an outstanding career record of 413 wins and 137 losses. Among the many athletes he coached were future Major Leaguers.
While baseball was his signature sport, Lee also coached football and basketball and taught biology, health, physical education, and driver's education. He served as sponsor of the Ritenour Student Council and later as assistant principal under Dr. George Chapman. To countless students, he was far more than a teacher or coach - he was a mentor who instilled values of discipline, integrity, sportsmanship, responsibility, and respect.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Lee graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Valparaiso University and a Master's Degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps where he also played baseball. He later continued his baseball coaching career at the junior college level, completing more than 45 years of leadership in the sport he loved.
Lee Engert's extraordinary accomplishments earned him numerous honors and national recognition. He was inducted into seven Halls of Fame including: Roosevelt High School, Valparaiso University, Ritenour High School, The Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, Chaminade High School, The National High School Baseball Coaches Association and The Missouri Baseball Coaches Association. In 1973, he was named the NCAA National High School Baseball Coach of the Year. In recognition of his lifelong dedication and impact on students and athletes, Ritenour High School honored him by naming its baseball facility "Lee Engert Field." In 2014, he received the Ritenour High School Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, Lee received many other Honors and Accolades.
Though his accomplishments on the field were impressive, those who knew Lee best will remember his kindness, humility, leadership, and unwavering belief in young people and his dedication to the Good Lord. Former students and players often spoke of the profound influence he had on their lives, crediting him for helping shape them into honorable men and women.
Lee was also deeply devoted to his faith and family. He shared more than 66 loving years of marriage with his wife, Joy, and together they raised three daughters: Renee, Colette and Suzette.
His legacy lives on not only in trophies and hall of fame honors, but in the character, confidence, and success of the thousands of students, athletes, friends and colleagues fortunate enough to have known him. Lee would tell you his success was "All God".
