Louise Marie
Schroer (Nee Snook)
Sep 18, 1931 — Feb 27, 2026
St. Louis County
Louise Schroer passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the age of 94.
Beloved wife of the late Herbert W. Schroer; mother of Kathy (Gary) Rapp, Brian (Mary) Schroer, Mary (Rob) Harper, and Regina (John) Woll; grandmother of Laura (Terry) Nolan, Kristen (Brett) Wemer, Julia (Jerald) Ridgway, Jo (Ahnna) Reed, Calvin Schroer, the late Miranda Harper, Mark Harper, Thomas Harper, Andi (Brian) Jefferis, and Sarah (Corbett) McKinney; great-grandmother of Emma, Andrew, and Cora Nolan, Luke and Rocky Wemer, Oliver and Amelia Ridgway, Stevie Reed, and Sylvie Jefferis.
Louise was born September 18, 1931 on the family farm four miles east of Rolla, Missouri to Ernest and Emma (Hoffmeister) Snook. She was later joined by her brothers Ernest and Donald. She was baptized on November 1, 1931 and confirmed on July 28, 1946 both at St. John Lutheran in St. James.
The farmhouse burned down in 1940 and they slept in the grainary of the barn and set up a kitchen in the chicken coop until the new house was built. In November of 1942, her father died and in 1944 they turned the farm over to her father's sister Annie and her husband and moved to town.
She attended Coffman School, a one room schoolhouse two miles from the farm until moving into town and finishing her elementary education at St. James Grade School and then graduated with honors from John F. Hodge High School in St. James in 1949.
After graduating from high school, she worked at the Federal Soldier's Home in the dining room. In March of 1950 she joined the newly opened Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol as a typist in the office. She and her office mate, Isabel Brookshire were known as "Brookie and Snookie".
While working at the highway patrol Louise learned one of her most popular jokes. A lieutenant would come into the office around 2:30 and ask her what time it was. When she answered 2:30, he would say "Tooth hurty? Time you went to the dentist!" So it makes us smile that her service is at 2:30. (Another favorite of hers was to ask if you knew how to make Budweiser. "Send him to school.")
It was while working at the highway patrol that Louise's cousin Rosie set her up on a blind date with her boyfriend's fellow soldier at Fort Leonard Wood, Herbert Schroer. The date was October 25, 1954. The four of them went to a drive-in movie. Herb was wearing a blue shirt and blue pants and was very easy to talk to. They became engaged in January of 1956 and married on July 28, 1956 at St. John's Lutheran church in St. James.
Louise began her full time job of mother when Kathy was born in 1958 with Brian and Mary and Regina following quickly in the next five years. The family lived in a stone house close to the campus of Missouri School of Mines where Herb received his mechanical engineering degree in 1960 and then worked for a local consulting firm. For several years, they rented rooms in their home to college students. They were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Pastor Friederichs was the pastor there until he accepted a call to St. Paul's Lutheran in Des Peres in 1967. When Herb received a good job offer from a consulting firm in St. Louis thanks to his brother Wil who was working there, the family packed up and moved to Des Peres and rejoined Pastor Friederichs at St. Paul's.
When Kathy entered Lutheran South in 1972, Louise once again took up paid employment, working in the cafeteria at Kirkwood High School where she stayed for 25 years.
She was involved in many organizations and activities over the years: Ladies Aid Corresponding Secretary, AAL Branch Secretary, Dorcas Society, Couples Club, Parent Teacher League, Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School volunteer, The Bulletin Bunch, Afternoon Guild, Evening Guild, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Voters, Nursery, Greeter, Bread Ministry, KFUO and LCMS volunteer, Des Peres Elderberries Second Vice President, bowling leagues (very proud of her high score of 209 at age 85!), and helping many, many friends with rides to church, stores, and doctor's appointments.
Born during the great depression, Louise knew how to make do with little and have fun while doing so. Nothing went to waste. Louise loved the color blue, Winnie the Pooh, reading, garage sales (the only time she was stopped for speeding was rushing to the rummage sale at St. Paul's), crossword and jigsaw puzzles, traveling, and laughing but most of all she loved God and her family. And what a legacy she leaves behind with four children, ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (so far). She was warm, fun, funny, generous, and loving and will be dearly missed.
