Margaret Irene
Proskey
Jan 31, 1935 — Aug 14, 2026
Town and Country
Proskey, Margaret Irene (nee Butler), passed away, Friday, August 14, 2026.
Irene Proskey passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family at the age of ninety-one on Friday, August 14, 2026. "Sugar," as she was affectionately known, was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 31,1935 to Nellie and Thomas Butler who were first generation immigrants to America from Ireland.
Irene was one of eleven Butler siblings, all who preceded her in death including Thomas, Robert, Harry, John, Helen, Kathleen (Steinhoff), Anne (McKeon), James, Mary Patricia (Glasgow), and Owen. She was immensely proud of her family of origin and there is no doubt that fiddles were playing, libations passed and jigs danced as Sugar was welcomed to her heavenly home and reunited with her Butler clann.
Irene married Dr. Vincent Proskey in Detroit on August 24, 1957. Upon Vince's completion of medical school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Vince and Irene moved to St. Louis, Missouri for his residency where they would settle and raise their five children Colleen (Gene Myers), Michael (Meg), Kelly, Tim, and Patty (John Stang). Irene was a loving grandmother of ten grandchildren including Nash, Michael (Kennedy), Meghan (John), Matthew, Marc, Maggie (Riley), Nate, Jack (Sarah), Tommy, Emma, and great granddaughter Lilly. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Vince and daughter Kelly.
Sugar had a special spirit, a quick mind and a razor-sharp wit that often had you wincing a bit and laughing uncontrollably at the same time. She was an incredible listener who cherished long family dinners with lively conversation, good wine, and great food she lovingly prepared and always made sure was served on a hot plate. Above all, Sugar loved life and would often say that every day her feet hit the floor was a good day gifted to her by God. Sugar made an indelible imprint on the hearts of all who ever knew her and she will be deeply missed.
The family wants to say special heartfelt thanks to caregivers who were often at her side in the last year of her life including Keonna, Vina, Bridget, nurse Angie from St. Luke's Hospice and many others not mentioned here. These special people cared for her needs, kept her safe and brightened her days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church (401 S. Lindbergh Blvd, Frontenac, Missouri, 63131) at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 20th, 2026.
