Obituary

Marjorie Jane "Janie" (Barry) Saxe passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7.
Janie was the beloved wife of 57 years to Michael Saxe; loving mother of Michael Jr. "Mick" Saxe, Tim (Lisa) Saxe, and Laura (Brian) Gunter; and cherished grandmother of Morgan, Lilliana, Charlotte, and Teddy Saxe, and Abby Gunter.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Janie was the beloved daughter of the late James and Marjorie (Scholl) Barry and the second of six children. She was the sister of the late Mary Louise (Michael) Glauber, Marcie (John) Merrell, Eileen (Ed) Cocetti, James (Alma) Barry II, and Tom (Renee) Barry. She was also the dear sister-in-law of Jerry (Electa) Saxe; treasured aunt and friend.

Janie and Mike met on a blind date in San Antonio, Texas, where Janie attended college at the University of the Incarnate Word. They married in 1968 at her childhood parish, Christ the King in Dallas. Soon after, Janie began her 30+ year teaching career in Germany, where she and Mike lived for two years while he served in the U.S. Army.

Janie and Mike returned to Dallas, where they welcomed their first child, Mick, in 1970. Two years later, they left her beloved Texas and made their home in St. Louis, where they raised their family and welcomed Tim and Laura. While lovingly caring for her three children, Janie also devoted 7 years to teaching high school math for the Special School District and more than 25 years in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.  A lifelong learner, she earned her Master of Science in Computer Education degree and continued her studies through night classes and summer programs. In her final years of teaching, Janie served as Mathematics Department Chair at McCluer High School and was active in the National Education Association.

Janie was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend. Patient, kind, and incredibly strong, she brought comfort to others with her radiant smile and caring presence. She was also a remarkable cook who shared her love through treasured desserts and baked goods.

Janie loved to travel.  She enjoyed numerous European pilgrimages with her Good Shepherd/Blessed Teresa parish community. She also loved music and dance, especially The Beatles, whom she was proud to have seen in concert two times. Janie generously donated her time and treasure to the theater and to the people, places, and causes she loved.

Janie was deeply resilient. She suffered numerous complex health conditions quietly, often choosing the peaceful comfort of her recliner and a math puzzle rather than speaking a word of complaint. Throughout her many health challenges, she showed extraordinary grace and gratitude to her countless caregivers and went out of her way to encourage healthcare workers in training.

Those who loved Janie will miss the warm comfort of her soothing voice, the joy of her radiant smile, her sharp mind, and distinct sense of humor.

Mike, Mick, and Tim wish to express their eternal gratitude for the uniquely loving care Janie's only daughter, Laura, provided throughout Janie's long struggle with many health issues. The Saxe family also expresses its deepest love and gratitude for the support of all friends and family, especially Janie's siblings, niece Christine Glauber, and nephew James Barry III.
