Mark Douglas Patrick Datillo, 72, entered into eternal peace on June 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family.
Mark was the beloved husband of the late Peggie Datillo. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Sharon Liekweg, with whom he shared two beloved children. He was the devoted father of Carrie (Nick) Ellerbeck, Julie (Jeremy) Davinroy, Jayme (Jay) Zvirgzdins, Kaela Datillo, Kyle Datillo, and the late Anne Datillo and Matthew Datillo. He was the proud grandfather of Dillon, Brooke, and Grant Ellerbeck; Sophia and Emily Davinroy; Anna, Evelyn, Juris, Janis, Matthew, and Samuel Zvirgzdins; and Adriana and Gavin Princivalli. He was the cherished son of the late Andrew and Zoe Datillo; beloved son-in-law of the late Francis and Eve Mullenschlader; dear brother of Janice Eckholdt-Carter, Marilyn Datillo, Kevin (Teri) Datillo, the late Michael (Nancy) Datillo, and Charles Datillo. He was also a loving uncle, cousin, and dear friend to many.
Mark was born on February 23, 1954, at Missouri Baptist Hospital to Andrew and Zoe Datillo. He was the fourth of six children, growing up alongside three brothers and two sisters in a large, close-knit family in North St. Louis. Mark held his parents in the highest regard and carried the values they instilled in him throughout his life, shaping the kind, calm, hardworking, and dependable man he became. As a young boy, he especially loved following his older brothers wherever they went. His love of sports began early as he enjoyed playing baseball, football, and basketball. Along with being an athlete, Mark was a dedicated student who frequently earned Honor Roll recognition.
Mark attended North County Technical High School and graduated from Riverview Gardens High School in 1972. He later earned a Bachelor of Technology in Technical Computing from Washington University in St. Louis in 1996, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
Mark built a successful career through his work at McDonnell Douglas and IBM, where he was respected for his intelligence, dedication, and strong work ethic. Throughout his career, he approached every responsibility with integrity and dependability, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
A devoted St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues fan, Mark enjoyed following his favorite teams through every season and was always ready to share a sports statistic, a story, or memories of a great game. He loved golfing, listening to music, staying physically active, and took great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard. His curiosity about technology kept him eager to learn about the latest gadgets and innovations throughout his life.
Mark's outlook on life was rooted in gratitude, hope, and unwavering faith. Even during life's most difficult moments, he would gently remind those around him, "There's always something to be grateful for." A handwritten note displayed on his refrigerator simply read, "Good feeling to know God loves you all of the time!" Those words reflected the faith that guided him each day and continue to comfort those who loved him.
Mark will be remembered for his dedication, strong work ethic, and the joy he found in life's simple pleasures. He was a kind and gentle soul whose quiet strength brought comfort to everyone around him. Hardworking, dependable, humble, and selfless, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, or anyone in need. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an easy laugh that brought joy to those around him. Though he never sought attention, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met through his generosity, compassion, and unwavering support.
Above all else, Mark will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. He was the proud father of six children and grandfather of thirteen grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Despite the demands of a full-time career and raising a large family, he always made time for those he loved. Some of their most treasured memories include outdoor runs, swimming in the pool, trips to the park, playing catch, flying kites, and even simple grocery store outings that somehow became adventures. His children will always remember hearing him laugh as he pushed them on the swings, joyfully saying, "You're going to the moon!"
His family remembers not only the adventures they shared but also the countless thoughtful ways he showed his love every day. Mark taught by example that love is found in showing up, lending a helping hand, offering quiet encouragement, and making time for the people who matter most. The memories he created and the care he put into even the smallest gestures will be treasured forever.
Mark's life was a testament to faith, humility, perseverance, and unconditional love. While his family grieves his loss, they find comfort knowing he has been reunited with his beloved wife, Peggie, his children Anne and Matthew, and the many loved ones who went before him. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the countless acts of kindness that defined his life.
