Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Burwell was called home to heaven on December 26, 2025 at age 92. She was born to William F. and Marie T. Cargill on July 28, 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas.

Mary excelled in school, as editor of the school newspaper at Donnelly College, and most importantly as an amazing mother. Her love and care of other people, intelligence, wit, patience and faith were demonstrated clearly throughout her life. She was a voracious reader, and a master of the crossword puzzle.

Mary and her husband Edward Burwell (1931-2022) met in Kansas City and were married in Germany where he was stationed with the Air Force. As a military family, they moved every few years, so their eight children were born in several states.  She always found a way to make each child feel like "they were her favorite"!

In addition to the overwhelming job of raising a family, moving often, coping with never ending challenges, Mary found the time to volunteer at nursing homes, to work at local elections, to lead a rosary group, and was a constant source of countless acts of kindness and generosity.

Mary joins her parents, William and Marie; her brother Bill (Lynn), her nieces and nephews Stephene, Brian, Kevin; her parents-in-law Guy and Lois; her sister-in-law Jackie (Gus); her daughter Thresea Maria (infant) all in heaven for a glorious family reunion.

She is be loved and remembered by her surviving children: Liz Eilers (Dennis), Geoff Burwell (Diane), Chris Burwell (Wendy), Eric Burwell, Elaine Kleinaitis (Joe), Jenny Bernardi (Mark), Ann Disser (Mark), Guy Burwell (Joanna Wecht); by her surviving brother-in-law: Don Burwell (Carol); by her surviving grandchildren, their spouses (and their 15 children, Mary's great-grandchildren): Jenny Zweigart (Matt), Brian Burwell (Kristen), John Burwell, Meagan Burwell, Erin Burwell, Jaclyn Schmidt (Ben), Sarah Harvey (Shaun), Mary Holt (John), Eric Bernardi (Claudia), Nick Bernardi, Hannah Ward (Chris), Kevin Kegin (Bonnie); by her surviving nieces and nephews: Schaen Cargill (Maria), Lisa Mouthrop (Tim), David Cargill, Cindy Long, Sharon Jordan (Ryan); and countless friends and neighbors.
