Obituary

Miriam (Helm) Schuchardt, a lifelong champion of education and women's advancement, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born January 30, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, Miriam was the eldest daughter of Dr. Albert and Esther Helm. The family lived briefly in Ohio before returning to St. Louis and later made their home in Colorado. Miriam graduated from Mount St. Gertrude Academy in 1957. Education was the driving passion of her life - she went on to earn multiple graduate degrees from St. Louis University, and later a master's degree in education counseling from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, continually pursuing learning long after her formal schooling concluded. These degrees led her to her true calling as a teacher and counselor in the Webster Groves Public School system, where she spent her career guiding and supporting students. She went on to serve on the board of the Missouri State Teachers Association, extending her commitment to education beyond the classroom.

Miriam was equally devoted to advancing the status of women, carrying that commitment through both her professional and personal life. She was an active member of Zonta, an organization dedicated to women's advancement, and a longtime member of Soaring Shares, an investment group.

In 1981, she married Richard Schuchardt of Ballwin, Missouri. Though the couple never had children of their own, Miriam's deep involvement with the students in her care made them her extended family in every way that mattered.

Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her sisters, Marilyn Helm and June (Helm) Steinmark. She is survived by her brother, Joe Helm; her nephews Frank Steinmark, Joel Helm, and Justin Helm; and her niece, Tara (Helm) Debardeladen. She is also survived by Richard's daughter, Karen Schuchardt, and granddaughter, Amy Lowry; and Richard's son, David Schuchardt, and grandchildren, Sawyer Schuchardt and Savannah Schuchardt.

Above all, Miriam was devoted to her family. Her love of travel and the joy she found playing the violin and organ filled her home with music throughout her life.
