Orvid
Halane
Nov 6, 1920 — Jul 24, 2018
Ballwin
Orvid Halane, was born 11/6/20, the only child of Chester and Edna (Hilpert) Halane, in Stanford IL, a small town 15 miles southwest of Bloomington IL.
He graduated from Stanford High in June 1938, having studied piano since he was in grade school.
He attended Illinois Wesleyan University 1938 - 1942, as a piano major. During his senior year, he met his future wife, Athlyne Henley (Athie), a freshman clarinet major from Webster Groves, MO. He soon was drafted and called to serve in the army, 09/42 - 11/45, working in the Signal Corps in Naples and Leghorn, Italy and North Africa. While away, he corresponded with Athie, who was continuing her college studies, and their relationship blossomed. Athie obtained her degree and started graduate work at the university on a teaching fellowship, completing her Masters of Music degree in the spring of 1946. Orvid started work on a Masters degree back at Illinois Wesleyan that same spring, continuing studies during the summers of 1946 and 1947, and receiving his degree following completion of a thesis in May 1948.
On August 30, 1946, the two married at Athie's home in Webster Groves MO, and left for Ridgefarm IL, a small town where Orvid taught music for the 1946 - 47 school year. They then moved to Smithville MO, a town about 20 miles north of Kansas City, where Orvid taught for the 1947 - 48 school year. They returned to St. Louis in 1948, and Athie's father helped them build a home in University City, where they lived from 1949 - 1966. Orvid began teaching vocal music in the Maplewood-Richmond Heights School District, and he stayed there until his retirement in 1984. While in University City, the couple had two children, Ronald and Sherilyn. They moved to a new home in Ballwin in June of 1966.
Orvid sang in the chancel choir at Grace United Methodist Church from about 1952 until 1975, when the family transferred membership to Manchester UMC. He continued to sing in the adult choir there until 1988. In addition, he rang in both the Manchester Bell and Vesper Bell handbell choirs at MUMC from 1985 - 2000, and accompanied various singers and ensembles over the years. He and his wife also were active in the Tuesday Morning Chapel Prayer Group at MUMC, and he continued his attendance at weekly meetings and assistance with the ongoing Prayer Chain following his wife's death in 2003.
In 2009, one day before he turned 89, Orvid moved to an assisted living apartment at the Meramec Bluffs Retirement Community. He soon began playing piano for Sunday morning worship services at the facility, and presented several holiday programs there with his daughter, a violinist. A 2015 stroke brought Orvid's performing days to a close, along with a move to the Meramec Bluffs skilled care center. Despite physical decline, however, his mental faculties remained intact, and his gentle demeanor and kind smile won the hearts of residents and staff throughout the retirement campus. With the help of his daughter, he continued to send birthday, anniversary, sympathy, and holiday greetings on a regular basis, distributed Valentines annually to Meramec Bluffs residents and staff, and was in the process of preparing yet another "shining star" accolade for one of his caregivers at the time of his passing.
Orvid was well-read (his care center room contained the likes of the National Geographic, The Met Opera News, and Reader's Digest), was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and brought smiles to many with his special sense of humor.
Beyond anything else, he shared unbounded love for his children, and never wavered from his total devotion for his beloved wife Athie, his "made-in-heaven" partner for all eternity.
In addition to his children (son, Ronald; daughter, Sherilyn Berger; son-in-law, Richard Berger), he is survived by 5 nieces.
