Richard "Dick'
Saffley
Nov 14, 1934 — Jun 5, 2026
Catawissa
Richard "Dick" Saffley, age 91, passed away peacefully into the presence of his Heavenly Father June 5, 2026 after a 20-year journey with Parkinson's disease. Carol, his loving wife, and family were by his side.
Dick was born November 14, 1934 to Alfred and Joyce Saffley in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and faithful friend to many.
After graduating high school, Dick served in the Coast Guard both on active duty and in the reserves from 1952 to 1965. While serving in the reserves, he also worked full-time at Lehmann Tool, followed by McDonnell Aircraft and completed his bachelor's degree from Washington University in Production Management.
Dick continued his 32-year career at McDonnell Douglas working in the aerospace and aircraft divisions. His love of space exploration persisted throughout his life, even after retirement.
Outside of his professional hours, he enjoyed sailing, hiking and camping with his family. Having owned numerous RVs, he and his wife camped in all 48 contiguous states. His ability to back a 34-foot Airstream into any campsite was truly exceptional!
Dick's faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior was central to his life. His actions and words were anchored in his faith and filled with gentle wisdom and authenticity. He prioritized showing interest in others and faithfully praying for them daily. Dick and Carol were longtime members of Central Presbyterian Church in Clayton, where he served as an elder and in various other ministries of the church. After moving to Ellisville, he became a member of Chesterfield Presbyterian Church and attended their worship services at The Fountains senior living community.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Carol (Lumar) Saffley; his daughters Valera (Bob) Bush, of Erie, Colorado; Robin (Rob) Hajicek of Catawissa, Missouri; and Noel (Doug) Kellogg of Ballwin, Missouri.
He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Rob (Kiffani), Emily, Lily Bush, Molly (Graham) Stevenson; Sam (Austin), Leighton (Venetria) Hajicek, Ness (Joe) Walker; Calvin (Livy) and Kalina Kellogg; and great-grandsons: Arthur Walker and Emrys Kelsey-Hajicek.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Chesterfield Presbyterian Church, 15037 Clayton Road, Chesterfield, Missouri 63017 on Tuesday, June 30. Visitation is at 11:00am with memorial service following at 12:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Micah Project (Honduras) https://micahprojecthonduras.org/donate
Dick will be loved and missed by all who knew and loved him.
