Robert "Bob"
Hoelscher
Jun 24, 1942 — Jan 30, 2026
Ballwin
Hoelscher, Robert "Bob", fortified by the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church and baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, peacefully entered eternal life on Friday, January 30, 2026, at the age of 83.
Bob was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Paul Hoelscher and Helen (Soehngen) Hoelscher. He grew up on John Avenue on the city's north side with his beloved sister Lucy (Hoelscher) Mattingly. Bob attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Christian Brothers College for high school and Christian Brothers College in Memphis for college. Marked by deep faith, hard work, service, and love for family and community, he was the devoted husband of Joanne Ruth Hoelscher (nee Berkenkotter) for 47 wonderful, happy years. Their marriage was a true partnership-rooted in the Catholic faith, mutual respect, and a lifelong commitment to serving others. They shared a deep respect for education which led to their lifelong careers as educators and the core values in which they raised Jeff and Paul. Even after Joanne's death in 2017, Bob continued to honor her life by the way he lived his own.
Bob was a proud and loving father to his two sons, Jeff (Stephanie Monnig) and Paul (Shannon Curtis). He was called "Papa" by his 6 grandchildren: Sarah, Emma, William, Samantha, Genevieve, and Abigail, each of whom knew his steady encouragement, gentle wisdom, and quiet pride. A lifelong educator for 37 years, Bob was an English teacher, golf coach, and worked summer jobs to help with family expenses. After teaching at Christian Brothers College High School, he served for more than 30 years as an English teacher at Crestview Middle and Lafayette High School in the Rockwood School District. His quiet yet witty sense of humor will be remembered. A lover of literature and a gifted woodcarver, Bob delighted in shaping both words and wood, creating hand-carved wood pieces that he generously shared - each one marked by care, patience, and love. His most cherished works were full Nativity sets that he gifted to family and friends. In fact, he risked the dangerous trek down steep stairs at home over his last few months of life to his woodcarving workbench with a mission to leave his grandchildren with their own Nativity pieces carved by Papa.
Bob's faith was not only professed-it was lived. He was highly active in Holy Infant Catholic Parish for almost five decades, serving generously as a Knight of Columbus, a past president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a tireless advocate for those with less. He took calls and provided for those in need quietly, faithfully, and with dignity for each person he encountered. He also volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital as a Wayfinder, offering presence, kindness, and compassion to patients and staff alike. He met with the volunteer coordinator just a month ago with hopes to return and volunteer this spring. Bob was a man of steadfast commitment.
To countless children and parents, Bob was a familiar and reassuring presence as a crossing guard in the Holy Infant School parking lot, where his warm smile and watchful care became part of the rhythm of daily life. Bob found joy in simple pleasures: reading, woodcarving, playing cards, and sitting in the beautiful sun room at his house. He enjoyed frequent trips to Schnucks and loved the county library. He was always practical, some would say frugal, a friend to a coupon and vested little interest in material things. He enjoyed time on the deck and boating at Lake Perry and friendships that grew deeper with time. Over the last eight years, he shared a treasured companionship with his dear friend, Mary Jane Bahr. Her dedicated and loving partnership brought renewed purpose, levity, and gratitude to Bob's life. Together, they enjoyed traveling, pickleball, cards, and birthday celebrations with fellow seniors at Holy Infant Church. Mary Jane expanded his friend group, kept him active and likely extended his time with us on earth.
Bob worked hard to support his family, loved deeply, and served generously. His easygoing temperament was strengthened by a lifelong, steadfast commitment to helping others in a very humble, unassuming manner. The way Bob lived his life imparts lessons of love and service for those who were blessed to know him.
