Obituary

Arther, Shirley Ellen (nee Von Derau) entered into eternal rest on June 25, 2026, at the age of 94.

Born on September 5, 1931, in St. Louis, Missouri, Shirley lived a life devoted to faith, service, and compassion. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Auburn University in Alabama before marrying the love of her life, Donald E. Arther, in 1951. Together they shared a life of ministry and service that spanned more than seven decades.

Alongside her husband, Donald E. Arther, D.Min., Chaplain Colonel, U.S. Air Force, Shirley faithfully served as an Associate Pastor and Associate Air Force Chaplain for 27 years. Her ministry took her across the United States and around the world, including England, Germany, and Thailand, where she dedicated herself to both youth and adult ministries. She also served as a secretary, officer in the Women's League, and in numerous related organizations, faithfully supporting the churches and communities she called home.

Shirley was a woman of many talents and accomplishments. She was a licensed small aircraft pilot and was admired for her unwavering commitment to ministry, having devoted more than 70 years to sharing her faith, encouraging others, and serving those around her. Throughout her life, she was a member of many churches across the world, with Webster Groves Christian Church in St. Louis serving as her home church.

Above all, Shirley will be remembered for her profound love, compassion, kindness, and acceptance of all people. Her gentle spirit, steadfast faith, and servant's heart touched countless lives and leave a lasting legacy.

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald E. Arther.

She is lovingly survived by her son, John Neff; her daughter, Henriette Burns; her granddaughter, Kelly Burns; her nephew, Christopher Von Derau; her niece, Susan Von Derau; and many extended family members, friends, and all whose lives were enriched by her love and ministry.

Shirley's legacy of faith, service, and unconditional love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
