Shirley Jean
Stines (Nee Matthews)
Mar 29, 1939 — Oct 14, 2025
Lake St. Louis
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, life partner, and friend, Shirley Jean Stines of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, on October 14, 2025, at the age of 86. She departed this world peacefully, surrounded by family and love.
Born in March 1939, she grew up in Hillsboro, IL, spending her free time with her mother, brother and cousins and playing outdoors. She moved to the Chicago area as a young child to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother passed away. After graduating high school, she was able to move in with her brother John and his family, and she took a job at Inland Steel where she met her future husband, Peter Stines. They married and moved to Oak Forest, IL where they welcomed the birth of a daughter, Deborah, and a son, Gregory. She worked subsequently in roles as a secretary, a hotel event planner, and as an office manager for Pete's CPA business. While the kids were still at home, she found joy and creativity in ceramics, watching her children play sports, and taking family vacations throughout the U.S. As empty nesters, she and Pete kept traveling, including a bus tour to Europe and smaller trips to festivals around the Midwest.
Shirley was able to see both Debbie and Greg marry, and to enjoy three grandchildren: John, Nick, and Allie (and several cats along the way). After the passing of her husband Pete, she reconnected with Ron Nosal, a friend she had known from the Oak Forest neighborhood, and they became life partners for nearly 20 years. With Ron, Shirley once again enjoyed traveling, including cruises and snowbirding to the Alabama Gulf coast. They shared a home in Lake St. Louis, Missouri and also enjoyed spending time and boating at the Lake of the Ozarks. She placed a high value on her family and took pride in hosting them on holidays and family gatherings.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, brother John, husband Peter and son Gregory. She leaves behind her beloved life partner Ronald Nosal of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, loving daughter Deborah (Kenneth) Rose of Loudon, Tennessee, grandchildren Johnathan Rose, Nicholas Rose, and Allison Rose, all of Illinois, and Ron's children Ronald (Lynn) Nosal, Jr., Deborah (Jon) Jobe, and Bryan Nosal. She will be remembered for her resilience and humor even in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Blood Cancer United (https:// bloodcancerunited.org /) or The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation ( https://themmrf.org/) .
