Obituary

Antoinette (Toni) McGrath, 71, of Millstadt, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8th, surrounded by her family. Toni was born on October 18th, 1954 in St. Louis, Missouri to Richard and Joan Chapman (née Lonigro).

The oldest of four, Toni's childhood was shaped by frequent moves with Missouri, Georgia, New Jersey, and Ireland among them. In addition to 'terrorizing' her younger siblings, Toni enjoyed sailing in Ireland, deer hunting with her brother-in-law Ben in the south, white water rafting trips, and later on, crossbow shooting.

After graduating from Medical Center of Central Georgia school of Nursing in 1975, she became a Registered Nurse, a turtleneck enthusiast, and world famous for her meticulous hair. Toni was a practicing RN for over 35 years. During her career she worked in the ICU, an oncology floor, and when she returned to STL she became part of the BJC team. She finished her career in home health providing the detailed care that she was known for to some of the most vulnerable patients.

Toni's return to St. Louis set the stage for the rest of her story to unfold. She met her future husband, Kevin McGrath, through her friend, coworker, and soon to be sister-in-law Cathy in 1988. They married in 1990, bought a home in 1992 and in 1994, they welcomed their daughter, Megan. When asked what she was most proud of in her life, without hesitation, Toni said, "Megan."

Toni loved the outdoors and adored her family. She spent many summers at Table Rock Lake camping with her sister Judie, nieces, nephews, and daughter. A true beach bum, and a reason to see her sister Joan, Toni spent many summers road tripping to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

One of the greatest joys in Toni's life was her grandchildren. In March of 2019, she earned her favorite title; Mimi. She took great pride in caring for her "babies" and loved her grandkids, Benny, Alex, and Evie fiercely.

Toni is survived by her daughter, Megan (Ben) Schmid; Sisters Judie Collier and Joan (Ben) Lee; Brother Richard Chapman; Grandchildren Benny, Alex, and Evie Schmid; Nieces Ashley (Ray) Finney and Brittany Collier; Nephews Michael (Lorena) Lee, Craig (Ashleigh) Collier, Chase (Nicole) Collier, and Chad (Trevor) Collier; six great-nephews and six great-nieces, all of which loved "Aunt Toni" tremendously.

Toni is preceded in death by her daughter, Hannah Kathleen McGrath; husband Kevin McGrath; mother Joan Chapman.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Nurse Sarah and the BJC Home Care/Hospice team.
