Obituary

Waggoner, Walter Dean, a devoted public servant, loving family member, and gifted storyteller, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026 at the age of 75.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnn Waggoner (nee Whalen); beloved father of Dawn (the late Robert) Gantz, Stacey (Michael Hoa) Nguyen and Matthew (Julie) Waggoner; dear grandfather of Emily Gantz, Stephen Gantz, Alexander Nguyen, Nicholas Nguyen, Brock Waggoner, Cullen Waggoner and Dryston Waggoner; brother of Thomas Eric (Peggy) Waggoner and Shelly (Jim) Bailey; loving uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and friend to many.

He dedicated 25 years to the St. Louis City Police Department and another 25 years with the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Throughout his career, he exemplified integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. His decades of service left a lasting impact on colleagues, the community, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Beyond his professional life, Walt was a person of simple joys and deep love for family. He had a passion for Western films, boxing movies and books, often sharing recommendations and favorites with those around him. He also loved to draw comics, bringing characters and stories to life with creativity and humor. A savvy bargain shopper, he found great happiness in hunting down the perfect deals, especially when it meant spoiling his beloved grandchildren.

Walt will be especially remembered for his storytelling. Whether recounting real-life police experiences or spinning imaginative, sometimes spooky tales for the grandkids, he had a way of capturing attention and bringing people together. Those stories, filled with humor, suspense, and heart, will live on in the memories of family for generations.
