Obituary

HONOR FRANCES GARSTANG HEBENSTREIT

On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, Honor Frances Hebenstreit, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 98.

Honor was born on March 23, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri, to James E. and Margaret (Wilkins) Garstang. She received her degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1947. On February 22 of that year, she married Richard Henry Hebenstreit. They raised two sons, Rick (Kathy) and David (Linda), and two daughters, Laura Schauland and Ann Crumpler. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren (Guthrie, Woody, Nathan, Honor, Peter, Dillon and August) and eight great-grandchildren (Hunter, Isabelle, Haley, Hayden, Isaac, Lynda, Alma and Luna).

Honor faithfully taught her children to love reading, and was their first and best swimming instructor as well. Along with her husband Rich, she (heroically) took her four children on cross country extended camping trips every summer as they were growing up to instill a love of both nature and our magnificent country. Later, she travelled extensively each year to visit her grandchildren and always kept an open door whenever they came to see her. Her devotion to gourmet cooking is evidenced in her 4,000 book library on the subject and her daily creation of exceptional dinner fare. Honor was active in Steven's Ministry and various Bible studies. She worked for many years as a volunteer therapist in Infant Stimulation for babies with disabilities. She was instrumental in supporting the newly established St. Martin's mission church in West County St. Louis and returned to it after retirement as an involved and dedicated member.

Honor loved entertaining, gourmet cooking, bird watching, knitting, reading, needlepoint, and golden retrievers. Her devotion to her children, her husband and her church defined her life. A special thank you to Sandy and Audrey and their canine angels Skylar and Callaway. Also thank you to St. Luke's Hospice caregivers and all the staff of Surrey Place.

Services: Honor's funeral will be held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 15764 Clayton Rd, Ellisville, MO 63011, Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Love on a Leash through their website or to St. Martin's Episcopal Church .
