Help When Death Occurs

The loss of a loved one can feel overwhelming, and it’s normal to be unsure of what to do next. You are never alone—our caring staff at Schrader Funeral Home & Crematory is available   24/7/365  to guide you through every step.

Step 1: Where Did the Death Occur?

Hospital

Call us immediately at (636) 227-5511. Hospitals may ask which funeral home you are using, but they rarely contact us directly. Your call allows us to begin the process, gather necessary information, and support you.

Nursing Home or Extended Care Facility

The facility often notifies us, but we also need to hear from you. There is information you’ll need from us and information we’ll need from you.

At Home

  • If under hospice care, the hospice team will either contact us or advise you to call.
  • If the death is sudden, call   911  immediately. A sudden death may require involvement from the medical examiner or coroner before we can remove the remains.

Out-of-Town

We frequently assist families in bringing loved ones home from out of town. Whether the death occurred while traveling or after relocating, we coordinate all details—including transportation, embalming, and working with local funeral providers. Consider our Travel Plan if you travel often—it can make these arrangements much easier.

Step 2: When You Call Us

When you call Schrader Funeral Home & Crematory, you will speak directly with a caring staff member—not an answering service. Our main number (636) 227-5511 is answered at all times. After hours, calls to our Eureka location are forwarded to Ballwin so someone is always available.

We will ask for the following information:

  • Deceased’s full name
  • Location and address of the deceased (hospital, nursing home, or home)
  • If the death occurred at home, whether the medical examiner or coroner has been notified
  • Your name, relationship to the deceased, address, phone numbers, and email
  • Next-of-kin contact information, if you are not the primary family member
  • Whether a prearranged funeral plan exists with Schrader Funeral Home & Crematory
  • Permission for embalming, if needed for visitation or ceremony

After your call, we’ll schedule an appointment for you to meet with a licensed funeral director at either our Ballwin or Eureka location. Usually, immediate family attends this meeting to make funeral or cremation arrangements.

Step 3: What to Bring to the Funeral Home

Bringing these items can help the process go smoothly:

  • Clothing for the deceased (complete outfit, undergarments, shoes optional)
  • A recent photograph for preparation and hair styling
  • Social Security number
  • Veteran discharge papers (DD-214)
  • Pre-arrangement paperwork
  • Cemetery lot information
  • Photographs for a Memorial Video presentation (if desired)
  • Insurance policy, check, or credit card for payment

You may also choose to complete our online arrangement form before your visit, which can simplify the process. We are always happy to take the time needed to make arrangements at your own pace.

DO NOT SCHEDULE SERVICES OR VISITATIONS BEFORE YOU SPEAK WITH A FUNERAL DIRECTOR!

There can be scheduling conflicts, cemetery regulations or requirements, and other situations that you are not aware of. It is imperative to include the funeral home in the funeral planning process!
